Since 2022, Israel’s Unit 8200 has been using a surveillance program, hosted on a customized Microsoft Azure cloud partition, to record and store voice recordings of millions of Palestinian phone calls each day from Gaza and the West Bank.

The system operates at an enormous scale, capturing up to a million calls per hour and storing about 11,500 terabytes, which equals around 200 million hours of audio by mid-2025. The data has been used to plan airstrikes, carry out detentions, and even engage in the extortion or blackmail of Palestinians.
