CALIFORNIA — There is a report circulating that on August 22, 2025, at approximately 13:10 PDT, a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing caught fire during ground operations at the United States Marine Corps Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.
Rescue services extinguished the fire, and all personnel were evacuated without injuries. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
The CH-53E is a heavy transport helicopter of the Marine Corps, with 152 helicopters currently in service. The helicopter is equipped with a GPS system, Doppler radar, a thermal imager with IR illumination (FLIR), a head-up display system (ANVIS HUD), and is capable of carrying external loads.
Heavy helicopter squadrons such as HMH462, HMH465, and HMH466 have up to 16 CH-53E aircraft per squadron, and these units are part of Marine Aircraft Groups including MAG16 and MAG29, with HMH462 “Heavy Haulers,” HMH465 “Warhorse,” and HMH466 “Wolfpack” belonging to MAG16.
