“I can’t understand what’s happening here,” pundit Shimon Riklin cried out at the start of his program on Channel 14. “This isn’t the Witkoff framework. It’s the Trump framework. The State of Israel is not involved. What’s going on?”
Ahead of Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to the Middle East, Hamas used Edan Alexander’s release to break the deadlock and push for rapid and direct negotiations with the U.S. to end the war.
The Witkoff framework, which called for releasing half the hostages now and the rest only after a broader agreement, is now defunct. In its place: a comprehensive, immediate release of all hostages, tied to an American-backed framework to end the war.
Until now, Netanyahu’s strategy was to present demands he knew Hamas would reject, enabling him to blame the group for blowing up the negotiations. However, Alexander’s release signals that Qatar and the U.S. are now aligned, and Netanyahu’s tactic may no longer work.
A source in the Gulf told Haaretz, “Everyone understands that the negotiations in Doha will be very short, and the Americans will apply pressure to reach an agreement. No one wants to be the party that the U.S. accuses of violating the deal.”
