🇺🇸/🇲🇽 After designating a 170-square-mile strip along the border between New Mexico and Mexico as a “National Defense Area” in April, allowing the U.S. military to temporarily detain illegal migrants or trespassers before being handed over to Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The U.S. Department of Defense this week established another “National Defense Area” in Southern Texas, consisting of a 63-mile-long strip running east from the border of New Mexico and Texas near El Paso. These designations follow an executive order signed last month by President Donald J. Trump, giving the Defense Department jurisdiction over the Roosevelt Reservation, a 60-foot-wide stretch of federal land that runs along the U.S-Mexico Border through New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
